The Marshall area has been inhabited by Native Americans for at least 10,000 years. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were French fur traders and missionaries. In 1851, the United States acquired land west of the Mississippi River as part of the Treaty of Fort Laramie. This land included present-day Marshall County. The county was organized on February 17, 1857, from parts of Dakota Territory and Minnesota Territory. In 1865, a railroad was built through Marshall County from Hastings to Superior. This helped improve trade in the area and contribute to economic growth in Marshall County over the years. In 1907, it was decided thatMarshall should be its own city. On November 3, 1907, voters approved a charter forMarshall City which became reality on December 1st of that year.
Marshall is a small town in the heart of Minnesota. It's known for its apple orchards and scenic hills, as well as its small-town atmosphere. The population was 4,711 at the 2000 census. The Marshall community began as a small farmstead on the edge of what is now Marshall County. In 1854, John A. Marshall founded the village of Marshall on a tract of land he had purchased from the United States government. (See map to right). The village grew quickly and by 1870 it boasted a post office, school, church and three stores. By 1880, Marshall had become an incorporated town with a population of 1,500 people. The history of Marshall goes back even further than that - to 1868 when David Wainwright established Wainwright's Mill in what is now easternMarshall County. At first, Wainwright used his mill to produce flour for his own family and others living in the area; but soon enough he developed into one of the largest farmers in westernMinnesota with mills located near Alexandria (now part of Minneapolis), Hastings (now part of Stroudsburg), Anoka (now Anoka-Hennepin) and White Bear Lake (now Chaska). By 1890, Wainwright had built two larger mills which produced flour for local markets as well asexportations throughout North America. Marshall County, Minnesota is named for General James A. Marshall, who was born in the town of Marshall on November 10th, 1821. Marshall served as an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War and later became a landowner and politician in the state of Minnesota. He played a significant role in shaping the history of Marshall County and its people. Beginning in 1881, Marshall County was divided into two parts—the eastern part went to Crow Wing County and the western part went to Winnipeg Township. These changes had little affect on the demographics or culture of either county. However, when Manitoba decided to secede from Canada in 1912, all regions within Manitoba were merged into a new national government called Canada East. As a result, Marshall County lost its status as an isolated rural area and began to develop more rapidly than any other region within Manitoba. In 1928, Canada grantedMarshall County full sovereignty over its own affairs and it remained that way until 2003 when it was renamed again to Marshfield after Congressman Don Marshfield (D-MN). Since then there have been few major Changes to Marshal's history; however some interesting tidbits include: The first post office opened at Peace River on October 1st 1903; The first courthouse was built at Hastings on December 10th 1907; The first football team was formed in 1924; The last census taken by Canadian authorities took place in 1966; In 2003MarshallCounty amalgamated with neighbouring Winona Township (now Goodhue) to form Park Rapids Municipality
