Marshall is a small town in the central region of Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,989 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Marshall community was founded in 1871 when cattle were driven to what is now Marshall from other parts ofMinnesota and Wisconsin. The first settlers were Quakers who had arrived in 1857 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The town was named for General David Marshall, who fought in the American Civil War and then served as governor of Minnesota. In 1933, a tornado killed 21 people and injured dozens in Marshalltown; it was one of the deadliest tornadoes on record in that state. The tornado's cause remains unknown although some speculation suggests that voltage fluctuations may have caused it. A new elementary school opened in 1984 and has been used by both public and private schools ever since; it is also home to the Masonic Lodge No 710 which meets at its regularly scheduled meeting room every Wednesday night from 6-8pm until current membership expires (the building can seat up to 350 people). In 2009, an addition to the high school complex called "The Gables" was completed with a $2 million dollar budget which included a library/conference center/entertainment hall/ playground/golf course within its walls as well as two adjacent classrooms for use by middle or high school students along with a full-time physical education teacher(s). This will add more than 1,000 square feet (120 m²) to Marshall's already large High School Complex!
