Marshall, Minnesota is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Minnesota, United States. It is located on the north side of the South Dakota border. As of the 2000 census, its population was 457. The Marshall post office closed in 1993. The town was named for Gen. George Armstrong Custer (1863-1937), who fought in World War I and two wars with Mexico. In the early 1800s, Native Americans from eastern Canada settled in what is now Marshalltown and began hunting white settlers and trading goods with them. In 1851, a group of Mormons founded a small farm there which they called "Mormon Station." Over time, other groups also arrived: Norwegian farmers around 1874; Scots-Irish Presbyterians in 1896; and Swedes in 1912. The town's namesake first appears on a plat dated December 25, 1887 as "Marshall Township".

Marshall, Minnesota is a small town in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1881. The population at the 2010 census was 514. The name "Marshall" is derived from the Dakota word "marsh," referring to a low-lying area where many people gathered for fishing and hunting. The Norwegian immigrants who founded Marshall were among the first people to arrive in what is now Manitoba. They came overland from Norway on horseback, wagon or boat. Many of them settled around Portage la Prairie, Manitoba; however, some moved into what is now Marshall because their land there had been donated by Colonel John Denny, who had bought it from the government of Canada for $5 million in 1876. In 1881, a group of men from Marshall set out to establish a new town in this location. They named their new settlement after General George Armstrong Custer – one of America's most famous Indian fighters during the American Civil War – as part of an effort to show support for Canadian settlers who were fighting against US forces stationed nearby. The town quickly grew and reached its peak population of 300 people in 1903 thanks to heavy trade with neighboring Winnipeg and other parts of Canada. However, economic recession hit Marshall hard during World War I and resultant rationing caused social unrest that led to several fires across the community over the course of year 1918-1920. By 1921, however, things had stabilized somewhat and growth resumed until 1951 when a major oil discovery made life difficult for rural Manitobans living near production wells located southwest of Marshalltown brought about significant layoffs and displacement within the local workforce."

However, no major incident involving firearms occurred until 1976 when two gunmen opened fire on students at San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district park killing three people and injuring dozens more before being killed by police gunfire
