Marshall is a city in Marshall County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,626 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1858 and named for General James K. Polk, who served as the first governor of Minnesota. Gun lights were first developed in Marshall in 1875 by John Wessels and Frank Loper. Marshall is a town in Marshall County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Marshall was John Nicolay on November 15, 1854. Nicolay and his family were among the first people to cross the Mississippi River into this territory when it was organized as Dakota Territory on February 14, 1855. Nicolay's father had brought over fifteen acres (6 km²) of land from Illinois in 1840 and sold it to John Nicolay in 1857 for $5 per acre ($ 2,500 at today's prices). This initial parcel included what is now Marshalltown and parts of what are now town of Hibbing and city of Duluth. In 1860, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., one of the founders of Minneapolis and future Ulysses S. Grant president, bought some land east of present day Marshalltown from John Nicolay for $1 per acre ($ 3300 at today's prices). With this purchase he became one of the largest landowners in what would become Minneapolis-St. Paul Area; he also donated an extensive piece of property west of town limits which became Madison Park (now Hennepin County Park). In 1870s there were two major waves migration to Minnesota by Americans looking for new opportunities: The Great Northern Railroad Migration led by entrepreneur George Stephenson started out with families coming through Canada then moving downriver to Iowa City before continuing north along the Chicago & Northwestern Railway line until they reached Steeleville (now Hastings), Iowa en route to Manitoba and points west . American farmers who had been cultivating wheat crops upstate began growing corn after USPresident James Kahl founded Des Moines Agricultural College (later Drake University) nearby in 1876; this “ Corn Belt” Migration increased crop production but also generated great wealth for those who owned or leased land where farming operations could be located. After years during which only men could own land or lease it from others without consenting from their wives or children – mainly small farmers – women began selling their homes and farms back East starting around 1880 when transportation improved enough so that goods could be shipped West across country without having to go through cities like New York City or Boston/Philadelphia bodegas where goods were auctioned off on busy days outside on large square blocks near Battery Square downtown Manhattan
Marshall was founded in 1858 by Levi Marshall and his brother Amos. The first store was on a tract of land that is now part of the city of Minneapolis. The brothers started out as farmers, but soon began to sell goods from their store. In 1886, they started a machine shop andrews & co., which became one of the largest manufacturers in town. They also built a schoolhouse in 1892. In 1907, they donated land to the city for a new public library. The library building still stands today and is used as headquarters for the Minneapolis Public Library system.
