Marshall, Minnesota is a small town in the state of Minnesota. The population was 5,874 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The Marshall community was named after General James M. Marshall who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as United States Secretary of War under President Ulysses S. Grant. The post office was established in 1881 and became a legal borough in 1907 when it merged with nearby Parkdale to form Marshall Borough. In 1924, it became a city and remains so today. The economy of Marshall is primarily agricultural with a small manufacturing sector including one store that produces soybeans for export to Mexico City. There are also two churches, one Lutheran and one Methodist, as well as two schools -one public and one private -and two businesses: a sawmill and an ice cream shop which operate continuously year round on cold winter days during summertime when there are no customers for either business. A variety of sports are popular here including baseball (the most popular sport), basketball (two teams play in the annual Minnesota High School Association championships), soccer (three teams compete each season), football (the most popular sport) and golfing (a course has been built near town). Marshall is a small city in central Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Marshall was named for General James K. Marshall, who served as the 25th Governor of Minnesota from 1903 to 1907 and as Commandant of the Army during World War I. The first settler in what would become Marshall was John Smeaton in 1858. A post office called Battle Lake was established in 1861, but it never opened because there were no settlers available to operate it. In 1872, a group of farmers led by Edwin Hammond settled around what is now downtown Marshall on land that had been donated by Moses Lyon. The town began to grow rapidly after Hammond built a sawmill and store in 1875 and started selling lumber. By 1880, there were six businesses operating in downtown Marshall: a grocery store, two hotels/motels, a restaurant/barbecue joint, a bank (the First National Bank), and two churches (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Methodist). By 1900, there were 10 businesses active in downtown Marshall: four grocery stores, four hotels/motels, three restaurants/bars/convenience stores, one bank (the First National Bank), and two churches (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Methodist). In 1925–1926 General James K. Marshall served as President pro tempore of the Minnesota Senate; he later became its speaker from 1959 to 1961 . On September 1st 1926 Marshal's home county seat—Dakota County—became part of urban Minneapolis when that city merged with Ramsey County following the collapse of the Great Depression

In the 1940s, Marshall was hit hard by the Depression and population decline. However, since the 1950s, it has seen a resurgence in economic activity as a bedroom community for Minneapolis.
