Marshall is a small town in Marshall County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 258 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settlers in Marshall were farmers who came from Iowa in 1854. They built a log cabin on the banks of the swollen Mississippi River and named it "Marshall". A post office was established in 1855, and by 1860 there were seventeen residents living in what is now Marshalltown. A railroad was developed through Marshall by Captain Augustus Beattie and his associates in 1887. The Beattie-Linton Railroad connected Marshall with St Cloud, Minnesota, about west. By 1896, there were settlements near present day Marshalltown (including Maple Ridge) with a total population of ninety five people. In 1900, Marshal had an estimated population of 1,500 people; but within two years that number had decreased to 300 due to changes brought about by World War I and Prohibitionism. After the war ended, many farms lost their crops because of lack of food production during Prohibition; this led to increased traffic on the new railroads which helped spur growth for Marshall over time. On July 1, 1912,[2] Marshal became one of several towns within still other communities along the Duluth-Superior Railroad when they merged into that company's system as part of its network expansion plan known as "the Great Northernabeam". This addition resulted in an 8 percent increase in business receipts for all businesses operating within Duluth-Superior County combined during 1912[3]. The industry that flourished during this time included manufacturing (steel making being especially prominent), lumbering (a mainstay since timber was abundant) and agriculture (growing corn). However following World War II much agricultural production shifted towards textiles as new factories began upstate New York City transitioned from heavy industry to service economy status; also following these waves came decline for some industries while others such as steel continued to grow rapidly throughout most of the 20th century - becoming one of America's most important industrial sectors by 2000 according to BusinessWeek magazine[4]. In recent decades however some companies have returned back to those traditional industries while others have ventured into new areas like health care or technology due to changing economic conditions or global competition[5]. Today, remnants remain from pioneer days including a reconstructed log cabin still standing on property now occupied by local residents,[6] courthouse lawns filled with interpretive displays on various aspects surrounding life at marshalltown during its early years,[7], annual parade honoring hometown hero Al Carlson[8] and more!

In 1876, the state of Minnesota annexed Marshall County to it. The population of Marshall grew rapidly after the railroads arrived, reaching 100 residents by 1907. By 1930, the population had declined to 50 residents due to heavy industry and competition from neighboring towns.
