Maple Grove is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It originated as a village on the east side of Maple Creek and was incorporated in 1881. The community was named after maple trees that were found nearby. The first settler in what is now Maple Grove was Samuel Haggerty. In 1851, John Hawkinson purchased land east of the creek from Haggerty and began to build a cabin and farmstead. He named his property Hawkinson's Prairie because he had bought it from Haggerty's father-in-law, Nicholas Gibbs. In 1869, James Fenton opened a feed store in Maple Grove and became its first owner/operator. This store operated until 1923 when it closed due to World War I rationing rules that forbade businesses from selling food products to soldiers overseas. In 1886, Isaac Saylor built a log cabin on what is now North Avenue near where he lived for the rest of his life. He also started farming here and raised chickens and pigs which he sold to local residents for their winter meals during the colder months. By 1898, there were about 100 residents living in Maple Grove with some 20 stores and one school serving them all. By 1909, there were only 10 residents living in Maple Grove but it had grown into an important commercial center with three businesses: A&P grocery store (1909), J & L millinery (1911), and Rice Elevator (1920). A post office called Maple Grove was established at this time; it remained open until 1953 when it became part of Robinson Township.. By 1920s standards, maple syrup production in Minnesota had become quite significant with several small outfits producing up to 50 barrels per day domestically plus exports to Canada . However Prohibition intervened early on making maple syrup production difficult or impossible within most stateside markets outside of Iowa . As prohibition ended throughout most eastern US by 1930s , many small operations ceased operation while others morphed into larger enterprises such as Chicago's Crystal City Products Incorporated who produced over 1 million gallons per year by 1940 before closing their doors entirely during the McCarthy era . However even as large companies closed down across America during this period , few if any remnant forests remain today capable of sustaining high levels of sustained annual growth like those seen centuries ago across much older hardwood forested regions
