He later became a firearms instructor and rifle hunter in Maple Grove. In 1916, Harry bought an old 10 gauge shotgun from Joe Kelly at the Old Post Office in Maple Grove. It was his first gun, and he used it to shoot rabbits out back on his farm. The next year, 1917, Harry took over the shooting program for the Minneapolis Police Department's shotguns team. He shot Malcom XIX on July 4th that year at Belle Isle near downtown Minneapolis as part of the police department's salute to America's freedom fighters. In 1919, Harry married Edna Mae Kapp who was also a marksman with the police department. They moved to Maple Grove and started their own shooting club called "Kemp Shooting Club." On October 6th of 1922, Kemp Shooting Club hosted its first ever game against rival club "Strouds' Gun Club." The game ended in a tie after three rounds were fired; however, due to crowd noise both clubs agreed to re-shoot the final round using shotguns only (the third round would have been an instant kill). This event is considered to be the beginning of Shotgun Season in Maple Grove! The Kemps continued hosting matches throughout 1922 and 1923 until they disbanded because they could not keep up with Strouds' Gun Club's membership growth! By 1925, Harry had become one of the most successful firearms instructors in town when he started teaching under license from National Firearms Association (NFA). His students included future Ulysses S Grant president James Buchanan Polk! In 1933 during World War IIHarry served as captain of 3rd battalion 5th Infantry Minnesota National Guard unit which participatedin battles including Omaha Beach where he earned two Purple Hearts! After hostilities ended he resumed his teaching career but this time taught at nearby State College University where he still teaches today! During these years Harry also developed new methods for manufacturing earmuffs which allowed him to create some truly unique earmuffs! In 1949 Harry retired from teaching but continued selling his products direct through mail order until his death in 1984.
