The village was founded in 1854 by John and Martha (Foley) Maple as an agricultural community on the eastern edge of present-day Maple Grove Township. It grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the east side of what is now Lake Harriet and its ample natural resources, including lumber and coal. By 1870, maple syrup had become a major industry in the area; it still is today. In 1902, Maple Grove became a city after being approved by referendum from residents who desired only rural annexation into their city limits rather than full township incorporation as had been proposed by their county commissioners. In 1967, following mergers with other townships in Hennepin County, Maple Grove became one of eight municipalities within the new Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Area; it retains its separate government but participates fully in all aspects of local governance including education and economic development coordination with nearby suburbs such as Bloomington and Minneapolis
Maple Grove is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. Maple Grove is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Maple Grove was John Deere in 1857. He and his family moved to the area from Illinois. The city's namesake tree is a Norway maple that stands on a hill near what is now downtown Maple Grove. In 1871, two brothers named Jesse and John Griggs bought land in what would become Maple Grove from David Dixon for $1,500 cash. They began to clear land and built stores and homes there until they sold most of their holdings to others in 1899-1902. In 1905, Hennepin County established an agricultural college here which eventually became known as Dakota State University (DSU). In 1916 when the United States entered World War I, DSU enlisted 3 students from Canada who had been living in the Twin Cities: Raymond Jourdain, Harry Wohlgrenz and Maurice Foley Jr.. The university continued operations even after the war ended with help from local businesses such as Ford Motor Company and Standard Oil of America which donated engines and trucks for use by military units returning home. During World War II much of downtown Maple Grove was destroyed by bombing raids during Operation Torch; however some buildings were saved including City Hall which still stands today as one of the few reminders of that time period in town center! Dennis Sheehan started construction on what would later be called Hennepin Avenue east of present day First Street when he was only 24 years old - making him one of youngest mayors ever elected to office anywhere in America! When finished his project he helped establish DSU's Center for Advanced Studies where researchers continue working today on many cutting edge projects! After WW II Elmira Park opened up along busy main avenue just west side of current day Second Street giving people within easy walking distance all that they could want or need without having to leave their apartments or go out into traffic! This park continues to be open today with several thousand people using it each year!
