Maple Grove, Minnesota is a small town located in the central Twin Cities region of Minnesota. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. Maple Grove has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and is one of the oldest villages in the area. In 1836, James Kippenberger founded what would become Maple Grove as a frontier village on land that he had purchased from the Dakota Sioux nation. The first settler in what would become Maple Grove was John Smith, who traveled to the area in 1837 to prospect for minerals. Smith built a cabin and named his community after maple trees found near his house. By 1840, many other pioneers had arrived in what would become Maple Grove, including Isaac Nachtwey and his brother-in-law George Armstrong Hanson. The first school was established in 1842 in what became known as Green Lake Village. This school served students from all around ruralMinnesota until 1850 when it moved to its present location on White Street near Maple Leaf Drive. In 1852, Minneapolis–St Paul University (later Univision) began offering undergraduate courses at Green Lake Village School which soon became notorious for its high quality education opportunities for low-income students. In 1865, following the Mexican American War, about 100 settlers from Saint Paul settled in what would become Maple Grove along with their families and some housing developments were established throughout the town during this time period such as Elmwood Park and Prairie View A&M College (now Prairie View A&M University). Maple Grove's growth continued through World War II when many farmers relocated to the area to fight in waged against Nazi Germany. However, post-war prosperity brought much social unrest and decline in development until the early 21st century when population reached over 10,000 residents once again. Today, Maple Grove is a largely residential community with some commercial and industrial activity centered around its main shopping plaza located at Highway 6 and Interstate 35W
