In 1870, Charles Fenton opened a lumberyard on West Seventh Avenue which still stands today and became one of the earliest suppliers of wood for the construction industry in North America. In 1871, Drury & Company founded a flour mill on South Second Avenue which remains operational today as First flour Mills Incorporated - one of only two remaining flour mills operating in Ramsey County (the other being Hennepin Mills). The post office at Maple Grove began operations on July 1, 1876 and continued operation until it closed on December 12th 1973 due to low mail volume; however, correspondence continued to be received by residents through the use of telegraphs until 1975 when all communication ceased due to vandalism by unknown individuals within the community

One of Maple Grove’s earliest landmarks is its Pioneer Cemetery which was established in 1862 by Reverend James Wohlgemuth and his wife Esther Vogt Wohlgemuth (née Ladd). At that time there were only five gravesites within a two-mile radius of Maple Grove proper; however by 1912 there were over 100 burial sites within a five-mile radius of town! Over time many pioneer families interred their loved ones here including prominent members of both rural and urbanMinnesota communities such as Judge George Romney (the father of Mitt Romney) and Attorney General Carl Schurz (who later became governor). Maple Grove was founded in 1854 by David L. McKay, a landowner and settler in what is now Polk County. The town became a community after the opening of the Minnesota Central Railroad in 1887. The town's population increased to 1,600 by 1911 when it annexed the neighboring village of West Maple Grove. Maple Grove was renamed Minneapolis in 1912 after President Woodrow Wilson's visit to that city.
