Maple Grove is a city in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Saint Louis County by population size. Maple Grove is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Founded on August 15, 1858 by Nicholas Maple and his wife Sarah (née Gopher), Maple Grove was one of the earliest towns in Ramsey County. It replaced an earlier settlement named Westwood which had been founded in 1846 by Alexander McKay and his family. In 1859, Maple Grove became a city and continued to be organized as such until it ceased to exist as a municipality on February 3, 1909 when all of Ramsey County became a Rural Municipality. The present day town of Maple Grove was platted on October 20, 1907 by John A. Dillingham who also donated land for the new community including parts of what are now Lyndale Heights and Sheboygan Heights neighborhoods east of Highway 94th Street. The name "Maple Grove" first appeared on maps in 1858 but it likely refers to a maple tree located near where today's road meets Prospect Road which served as the original village square The first post office in Maple Grove was established on November 16, 1886 with Jules Vandemare as its first clerk. By 1900 there were six post offices in adjacent towns: Hennepinville (1893), Brooklyn Park (1894), White Bear Lake (1901), Twin Cities (1902), Richfield(1903) and Eagle Lake(1905). In 1911 Piper Prairie Post Office opened just south of present-day Mapleton Avenue while Northdale Post Office opened two miles northeast at what is now northbound Interstate 35E off University Avenue concurrent with Richfield until that point only serving residents within Township 54A north of Rochester Hills distant from mapleton In 1912 Wanamaker Drugstore opened across US 95 from what is now MAPletown Shopping Center replacing an earlier drugstore known as Dutchman's Hardware operated by George Wanamaker before that date along with Oak Lawn Cemetery originally started by General Mills before that date . East High School was built around this time while Central High School closed in 1927 . During World War I there were three military hospitals operating out of Maple Grove - First Army Hospital No 2 then Third Army Hospital No 4 both located next door to each other across Prospect Road; Second Battlefronten German hospital also located nearby just west of Hennepinville Road; Fourth Battlefronten Netherlandish hospital also located nearby just west of Hennepinville Road Although not officially connected with either war effort they served together as treatment facilities for troops during the conflict . After the war many veterans returned home followed by families which helped populate the town primarily through agriculture although some businesses did open such as The Methodist Episcopal Church which served food to soldiers during World War I later becoming known as "the old mill". On December 23rd 1905 Mayor Augustus Fenton announced plans for development eastward from US 95 including erection of several blocks high Holmstreet between Cedar Avenue and Channing Boulevard creating what would become downtown Maple grove with business districts extending northeasterly beyond these boundaries into Stillwater neighborhood northwest along Channing Boulevard then eastward along Cedar avenue towards MAPletown Shopping Center again eventually reaching into Stillwater neighborhood northwest along Channing Boulevard finally terminating at IQT Parkway outside MAPletown
