Maple Grove is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,751 at the 2010 census. Maple Grove was founded in 1853 by George Haines. It was named for maple trees that grew near his farmhouse. Maple Grove is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River and is bordered to the north by Armstrong County and to the south by Morrison County. The first settler in Maple Grove was John Auld who arrived in 1853. He built a cabin on what is now Stinson Road. In 1854, Alexander Stevenson came to Maple Grove from Canada with his family and began raising corn (maize) and hay on his farmstead. At this time, there were no schools or other infrastructure in rural areas so education for farmers depended largely upon trade routes which led through Minneapolis or Saint Paul. In 1855, John Dinges moved from Harmony Township to start a lumberyard adjacent to his farmstead where he operated until 1865 when he sold his land to George Haines who founded the village of Maple Grove on November 15th of that year with five hundred acres (2 km²) of woods and meadows behind his home as its nucleus. The first post office opened in Maple Grove on December 3rd of 1861 under the name "Harmony." However, because it was located close enough to Minneapolis that mail could be delivered directly into town rather than being routed through Saint Paul, only three years later it became an incorporated community with its own government - a board of commissioners chaired by Mayor James Waddell - when Minneapolis annexed Armstrong County on January 1st of 1865. On July 1st 1870, residents voted 8-1 to change their name from "Harmony" to "Maple Grove." Thisename remained until May 25th 1956 when it changed back again - this time becoming "Maple Ridge." The original site for what would become downtown Maple Grove had been Previously used as farmland before becoming developed as housing during World War II including two large warehouses which are still extant today: US Paper Products Warehouse No 2 (now known as Midtown Center) and US Steel Products Warehouse No 4 (now known as One First National Bank).
On July 1, 1868, the town of Maple Grove was organized as a village in Dakota Territory. On December 17, 1889, it was renamed Maple Grove Township. The township was established on February 27, 1903 and became a city on October 20, 1907.
