In 1868, United States General David Hunter destroyed most of Sioux City due to its prevalence of gambling dens - one such incident being an attack on a Native American encampment by white men during which five men died as a result In 1870–71 three Germans built a sawmill on current site of First National Bank (now known as Wells Fargo) – this mill became an important factor for growth and development in town throughout its early years. In 1871 Colonel Augustus Halleck purchased 1/2 acre (0.16 km²) north of current Fourth Street between Capitol Drive and Elmira Boulevard for $100 (). This land would become home to two small businesses: Halleck's Millinery Company (later renamed Macy's department store) and Grosse Pointe Brewery Company ().
