They were followed by other pioneers over time such as Isaac Nibley who arrived in 1840 and built up a farm around present day downtown; John Fetterman who settled around 1850; Enos Wright who platted what is now Riverview Cemetery in 1865; George Hennepin bought land northeast of town in 1870; James Brady laid out residential streets east of downtown along US Highway 61 between 1880 and 1890; Methodist Episcopal missionaries set up their first church here in 1895; local lumber companies developed businesses here such as Jorgensen & Sons Paper Mill (1897), Wabash Coal Mine (1907), Pillsbury Machine Company (1910), Minneapolis Grain Terminal Company (1920) and Stegeman Rubber Company (1929). During World War II many residents took part in military service including men from Mankato drafted into the U.SArmy Signal Corps radar station at Hamline University which operated from 1943 through 1945 during World War II. After hostilities ended the community turned its attention to rebuild with support coming from both private citizenships as well as state government funding through various programs including CONUS Aid which provided work opportunities for veterans returning home while also providing education for their children born after September 10th 1944 when America entered World War II automatically becoming war zones across all fifty states regardless of whether they lived within their original state boundaries or not
