The population was 26,362 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth most populous city in Minnesota and the fifteenth most populous city in Minnesota overall. The name "Mankato" means "peaceful place." The first European to sight what would become Mankato was Captain Jean-Baptiste Marquette on July 16, 1763 during his journey from Green Bay to Superior during the Great Lakes Expedition. He named this location after John Mankato of Sauk County who had accompanied him on that expedition as part of the Council Bluffs Battalion under General fort Snelling's command. In 1824 James Kossuth founded a fur trading post at present day Mankato along the river when he began his so-called Dakota War against United States authorities over claims to land east of the Missouri River that were part of Indian Territory according to Treaty of Traverse City (1821). Kossuth's post operated until 1840 when it was abandoned due to American encroachment into Indian Territory following Manifest Destiny policy aimed at expanding U.S. territory westward by claiming all Native American land not covered by treaties or military engagements leading up to wars like those fought between Ulysses S Grant and Cheyenne Chief Big Horn in 1865-1868 which led to an estimated 350 killings by white settlers in Nebraska Territory alone within three years - more than any other area in North America! In 1851 David Davenport established an agricultural colony called Davenportville near modern day Mankato which evolved into what we know today as MN State University; adjacent properties included 4 miles (6 km) of Lake Superior shoreline and 720 acres (280 hectares) upland including rolling hills now home to many commercial enterprises such as Target & Sam’s Club!
