This growth led to social tensions which culminated with an anti-immigrant riot that took place on October 15th 1898 when Italian immigrants were brought into town for a day market parade by local farmers who mistook them for native Americans; this event has been called "the worst race riot in America". In 1901, after years of wrangling between various business interests within Minneapolis Township No., citizens rallied together and successfully passed a resolution allowing single women without husbands or children to vote without fear of being discriminated against or worse attacked by their male counterparts at future municipal elections dating back to then also known as township meetings - something segregationists up until then had been unable or unwillingto do given their political power base within their respective communities). Afterward Mayor George Shultz spearheaded efforts throughout his tenure (1901-1920) establishing public libraries throughout central MN while also working towards creating Progressives control over both City Council memberships through increased regulation/federal funding as well as increasing police powers (euphemistically referred to at that time as "urban renewal").
