In 1916, an administrative law change moved Minneapolis's water supply from White Bear Lake into what is now downtown Minneapolis; this led to increased business interests in Mankato because it could now be served by vessels docking there rather than having to traveling upriver several miles (and then ashore). Mankato has been bypassed by Interstate 94 since 1971; however, it still forms an important node on the Mississippi River flood plain west of Saint Paul so floods can be controlled more effectively by levees and ditches than by bridges or roads cutting through tall prairies full of wetlands. The city's importance has declined somewhat since then as suburban growth encroached on its boundaries but it remains a major center for agriculture and transportation within Ramsey County east of downtown (the Cities Of Plymouth and Maplewood also have significant populations)

Mankato was founded by Norwegian immigrants who were looking for a new land to settle after their country lost its Revolutionary War victory to England. The first settlers arrived in 1854 and the town was officially established on January 1, 1855. Mankato was named for John Hennepin, an American general who fought in the war and later became Governor of Minnesota Territory from 1785-1789. The first school in Mankato opened in 1860 and it remained open until 1915 when it was replaced by the present day high school building which also houses the library. The population of Mankato decreased from around 1500 people during Prohibition Era to just over 500 people by 1960 due to lower production values within the local agricultural sector. However, this change has not reflected negatively on Mankato as it continues to be one of the most vibrant communities in NorthernMinnesota today with a rich history that has yet to be fully appreciated statewide or nationally.
