Mankato was founded in 1857 by Norwegian immigrants and was incorporated as a city on December 1, 1914. Mankato has been heavily influenced by Scandinavian culture and architecture. The original white settlers arriving in what is now Mankato were farmers from Norway who arrived at the mouth of the river Mississippi in 1857. They started out as farmers but soon built sawmills and other businesses around town to provide goods for their new home. The city's first mayor was Ole Christiansen, who served from 1861 to 1865. Other early mayors included Peder Olsen (1877-79), John Wickersham (1885-87), Aage Pedersen (1900-02), Christian Kjærstad (1906-08), and Lars Ottosen (1910-12). Later immigrants brought their own unique styles of architecture to Mankato – some called it "Norwegian Prairie" style due to its similarities to that found in rural areas of Norway where farms were scattered across large valleys with mountains towering behind them.
