Mankato is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Mankato County. The population was 15,859 at the 2010 census and 20,764 as of 2019. It is home to two national historic sites: Fort Snelling National Historic Site and Hennepin County Courthouse Annex National Historic Site. The first ammunition depot in what is now Mankato was built on Military Road by George Armstrong Custer in 1878. Ammunition production began here in 1879 when J.W. Hurley & Sons opened a gunpowder plant on the site which continued until 1902 with a capacity of 10,000 rounds per day. In 1886, another gunpowder plant was established by Elisha Gray & Company at what is now First Avenue and Plymouth Street; this also produced 1 million rounds per year until it closed in 1903 due to overloading and fire hazard issues. In 1892 saw manufacture begin for shells for artillery use with Ayer & Bacon opening a blast furnace near Center Street where they continue to operate until 1929 when they merged into Vickers-Armstrong munitions company along with other companies to form one large corporation under the name "Vickers-Armstrong". This new company became known for their high quality ammunition including some that were developed specifically for American military usage such as .50 caliber sniper bullets which became standard issue throughout World War II across all services.]] From 1933 onward through 1949 Ammo Corporation operated an armory located on Fourth Street south of downtown serving both local police forces as well as federal agencies like the FBI Headquarters during its peak years.]] In 1951 Ammo Corporation discontinued operations after more than 40 years in business specializing in manufacturing high quality ammunition products]]] Ammo production resumed again at Ammo Corporation's old armory location starting October 1st 1952 after numerous renovations which included enlarging the loading docks, adding an increase to storage capacity from 2 million rounds up to 8 million rounds total, remodeling 1968-1971 addition called "The Tower" (later renamed "Hennepin County Courthouse Annex"), installation of new roofing, renovation/replacing several landmark columns including those supporting roofline along Superior Avenue north of First Street exterior walls], improvement/renovation work done on mainframe computers used by ammo manufactuers during THAT time including installation of microfilm reader for automated counting procedure]]] The average annual output increased from 9 million round equivalents Per Year 1951-1957 to 21 million round equivalents Per Year 1958-1960 before declining back below 17 millions RPE 1965 through 1969 before increasing once again reaching 22 millions RPE 1970 thru 1979 however beginning 1980 ammo production dropped off once again becoming barely above 14 millions RPE annually}} Production recommenced January 1st 1981 following completion of extensive renovations completed during previous summertime[[#ref:https://www2.nps.gov/fnicas/nr92297/pdfs/FNI_1023434_-History%20of%20Ammo%20Corpulence_1_.pdf|here]] One significant change brought about by this restarted production was the introduction of metric measurements into ammo manufacturing henceforth known as “Metric Shelling” thusforth remaining unchanged since initial introduction}} After many years struggling against competition from foreign manufacturers [[#ref:https://en.wikipediausercontent.com/-WcNVGZJzKPM|here]] culminating with bankruptcy receivership{{{Ref}}} Production ceased around 1990 meaning that only 60000 rounds per week could be made available currently making it one of America’s smallest licensed ammunition producers having only been producing 7 or less rounds per week since 1984}} Today there are three active manufacturers left making traditional unmetered cartridges }}
