The Lino Lakes Post Office was established in 1881, and closed in 1969. According to the 2010 census, Lino Lakes has a total area of , of which (or 98%) is land and (or 2%) is water. The streams that flow through Lino Lakes are Elk Creek and Little Elk Creek.

Lino Lakes is a town in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Lino Lakes was founded in 1857 by Norwegian immigrants. It is the only community in Dakota County that was established before the creation of the state of Minnesota. Lino Lakes is located on the edge of a large agricultural area and its residents are typically farmers or ranchers. The townsite has been variously used for lumber production, sawmilling, farming, and as a stop on stagecoach routes between Minneapolis and Fargo. The first settler in Lino Lakes was Ole Olsen who arrived there with his family in 1857. He built a log cabin and started to farm the land around it. By 1860, Olsen had erected two small stores and a schoolhouse near present day Lino Lake Boulevard and Highway 12th Street. In 1871 he married Anna Maud Sletta from Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland and they moved to Lino Lakes to start a new life together. In 1881 John Fenton bought land adjacent to present day Lino Lake Boulevard east of Interstate 55 for $1 per acre (which equals $ as of 2019). He began to build homes thereon but when construction stopped due to bad weather he sold most of his land back to Olsen for $3 per acre ($ which equals about $ as of 2019). This illustrates one aspect about early settlers: not all were interested in developing their properties so quickly; some found it more profitable just let their holdings lapse into obscurity over time without selling anything back out again. Newcomers such as Fenton helped spur economic development within Lino Lakes through what can be called "the Gilded Age" period from 1888 until World War I. In 1906 Ole Aamodt opened up what became known as "Aamodt's grocery store", which still stands today on Main Street west of US Highway 12th Street. Aamodt's business model involved renting space inside other businesses throughout the city during different seasons so customers could get whatever they needed while also buying groceries from local merchants outdoors or even at Aamodt's store itself!
