Lino Lakes is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Lino Lakes is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Lino Lakes was founded in 1892 by Norwegian immigrants and became a community of Norwegian-American farmers and ranchers. The town was named after Lino Jonsen, an early settler and lumberman who operated a farm on the east side of the lake. In 1906, Lino Lakes became a city when it merged with nearby Rochester. The townsite that now includes Lino Lakes was first settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1892 as part of what would become Minneapolis-St. Paul Township (later Ramsey County). The name "Lino" came from Knut Fridtjof Nansen's father, Lars Ole Fridtjof Nansen (1824-1904), who had worked as a logger on the bluffs overlooking Lake Superior near present-day Apple Valley until he lost his land to developers in 1868. Norwegian settlers arrived beginning in 1881 seeking landowner rights for themselves along US Highway 86; many were successful and began selling their holdings to others soon after they were acquired, including Ole Olsen (1851-1928), one of the largest landowners in town today through his ownership of several farms located near Clearwater Springs Dam on the eastern shore of the lake; Sivertsen & Company; John Kiewit & Company; Alvord Moberg & Company; Gudmund Bjerkelandt & Co.; and Rasmus Pedersen & Co.. Settlers built homes orchards and raised livestock before becoming involved with farming themselves – principal crops being hay, oats, potatoes, fruit trees orchards/gardens (elderberries/strawberries grew plentifully hereabouts), dairy products such as whey cheese and butter from milk cows and calves – raising chickens for eggs or meat through coops made from logs erected over ditches dug deep into streambeds long before modern water systems existed for these activities; fishing also enjoyed some popularity among early residents – both locals and those coming downriver for trade goods caught catfish ("lakse"), garter snakes ("krabbel")and various other game found along both banks of Lake Albert just below present day Lino Lakes Road crossing it about midway between town center on one side bank opposite where current US Highway 8 intersects it heading southbound while staying eastbound going northward across Clearwater Springs Dam on its western bank then turning northeast via Maple Street up Red River valley thence crossing White Earth Creek - known then as Hwy 87 - alluvial fans resulting in excellent spawning habitat for Picatinny Point eels which inhabits this waters during wintertime when temperatures drop below 50° F (-12° C) Schmidt’s Eel Farm sold lots there starting about 1840 but only started catching eels properly about 1860 according to local historian Arvid Olson about 100 miles SE cornering Lake Superior Devils Gulch Rinne open watershed area northwest limits today 6 acres wide within township boundaries wady bottomed creek flowing southeast 2¼ miles long entering Ritchie Creek abovepresent day bridge over confluence thence draining into Crow Wing Bayou Norwayans arrival: 1881 Pioneer years: 1850 – 1861 Townsite founding date: Apr 9th 1862 Name change to Lino lakes Apr 9th 1862 .
