The name "Lino" is a word meaning "place where wood grows." Lino Lakes was platted in 1853 by John Fetterman and named for his brother-in-law, Augustus L. Lynde. The community has been known for its boatbuilding industry since the 1800s. In 1906, Lino Lakes became one of several communities to join together to form the Minneapolis - St. Paul Metropolitan Area (MSA). Since then, Lino Lakes has become an important community in southeastern Minnesota. Lino Lakes is home to several schools including: John Fetterman High School which serves students from grades 9th through 12th; Maple Grove Middle School which serves students from grades 7th through 8th; and Creston Intermediate School which serves students from grades 5th through 6th. There are also two churches in Lino Lakes: First Presbyterian Church and LutheranChurch of Christ in America. The city's economy centers around manufacturing as well as services such as retail sales and real estate development. In 1949, Lino Lake City merged with neighboring Rochester to form the larger Rochester-Lino Lakes metropolitan area.
