In 1932, construction began on the now defunct Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport which helped stimulate growth in Lakeville. Today, Lakeville functions primarily as an agricultural community with some retail businesses and services available to residents. The economy of Lakeville is based largely on agriculture which continues to be the mainstay of the local economy despite increased competition from surrounding municipalities. The original town was on an island in the Saint Croix River, about 5 miles northwest of what is now Minneapolis. In 1927, part ofthe township became addition to what is now Bloomington metropolitan area. During World War II, Lakeville served as a major munitions production center for the United States military. Multiple factories were built here including an airplane manufacturing plant that produced P-51 Mustangs for the USAF; an armaments factory that produced M3A1 tanks; and a chemical plants that manufactured shells and torpedoes used by Allied Forces during World War II. The town also hosted numerous army barracks while they built up their war equipment collection at nearby Mitchell Army Airfield. In recent years, Lakeville has undergone several changes both positive and negative. In 2007, development began on what is now known as "The Loop" project which will bring hundreds of jobs to the area along with new housing developments and retail shopspace projects totaling over $100 million dollars investment plans have been announced for downtown area alone since then as well as additional projects across various neighborhoods adjacent to it such as South Park Village & Turtle Creek Estates which are scheduled to come online by 2021-22 bringing about 2K+ residential units on 5 parcels totaling over 10 acres each . Additionally another new development called "Morningside" has recently been completed just east of downtown proper comprising high end apartments/condos along with multiple businesses including restaurant/bars/nightlife options etc.. It should be noted that this latest wave of development comes at a time when many small businesses have closed or seen diminished revenue due to overall economic uncertainty throughout much OF THE COUNTRYThese types of largescale investments only happen when there is real hope for long term success - something thathas yet to materialize in central MN given our current political landscape
