The name "Lakeville" was chosen and initial development proceeded without any problem until 1872 when local residents decided to rename their new township after General George Armstrong Custer due to concerns over possible historical inaccuracies about his battle against Native Americans at Little Big Horn (1876). This event helped solidify Canadian settlement in northwestern Minnesota and made Lakeville one of the most important commercial centers in that region during the late 1800s; however, its importance gradually diminished over time due mainly to competition from larger towns such as Rochester (New York) and St Paul (Minnesota). In 1955, when Minneapolis became an independent city, it merged with neighboring Maple Grove which had also been founded as a town by settlers from Canada just minutes earlier. Because both towns were located on large rivers near each other - both had strong agricultural roots - they quickly became merged into one municipality with similar demographics and economy. This merger marked another step forward for Twin Cities culture; together they created one major city where people from all walks of life could live side by side without havingto commute far or leave their homes every day for work or school..
