Inver Grove Heights is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 17,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St.Paul metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1881 by Swedish immigrants as Inver Grove Heights Township. The name originated from an aboriginal word meaning "in or on the shore of a river." The township was disbanded in 1912 and its land merged into that of Hennepin County. Inver Grove Heights was first settled primarily by Norwegian Americans and English-speaking Germans who immigrated during the 1840s and 1850s to escape religious persecution in Norway. By 1870, about 60% of the population were Anglo-Saxon Protestant; 10% were Finnish American; 5% were Irish Catholic; and 3% were Jewish (according to data from 1880). Most of these immigrants arrived through Saint Paul's portside train station on Lake Superior (now Midtown Minneapolis). In 1881, when the township was dissolved, most of these men moved to what is now Inver Grove Heights because they wanted a more spacious townhome than they could find in their original neighborhoods in Oslo or Stavanger. The original homes built between 1881 and 1912 are among the oldest remaining buildings in Inver Grove Heights. Many residents still live there today including three mayors: Floyd Bostrom (1962-1967), Robert Segal (1977-1981), and Rebecca Kleedahl Hanson (2007-2009). Over time many different types of homes have been built: bungalows, Craftsman cottages, two-story brick houses with chimneys, fourplexes with attached garages/yards for up to 16 cars each—all made out of wood until around 1970—and now all kinds of "smart" home technology products are being sold here such as Nest thermostats or Vivint Smart Home systems

Inver Grove Heights is a small town in Minneapolis, Minnesota that dating back to the 1800s. The settlement was first known as "Inver Grove Heights," and it was renamed after Alexander Innes, an Englishman who settled in the area in 1836. Inver Grove Heights is located in the University of Minnesota's Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2010, the population of Inver Grove Heights was 9,519 residents. The early settlers of Inver Grove Heights were Native Americans who had fled from British occupation of North America. They built their homes around a large swamp which they called "The Great Bog." By 1836, many English people had also arrived in the area and began to settle there. One of these newcomers was Alexander Innes, who named his new community "Inver Grove Heights." He may have been inspired by a place called Kingston-upon-Hull in Yorkshire, England where he had family connections. Alexander Innes started out as a farmer and later became involved in lumbering and retail trade. He also served as Mayor of Minneapolis from 1907 to 1912. At some point during his career, he met his wife, Julia Lewis (née Clark). They married on May 1st, 1907 and soon moved into their own home at 7th Avenue South and Lyndale Street within Inver Grove Heights proper. Julia Lewis died on September 12th, 1992 at age 95 years old; she is buried beside her husband at Springdale Cemetery within Inver Grove Hills proper. During World War II, many members of the local military service were stationed within or near InVER GROVE HEIGHTS!
