The name Inver Grove Heights comes from an early settler's story of finding an inlet on the river and naming it after his ancestor, Angus Forbes Inver (1772-1828). The first villages in what is now Minneapolis were founded by farmers who had to cross the river each day to get their goods to market. By 1871, there were over 20 village sites within a mile of downtown. One group of pioneers, led by Captain John Denny and his brother Amos Denny, bought land along present-day Lyndale Avenue for $10 per acre. They named their new community Inver Grove Heights because they found sloping ground near an inlet called Glencoe and thought it would be a good name for their settlement. Most people who lived in Inver Grove Heights during its early years were farmers or laborers who earned their living working on farms or plantations near downtown.
