The history of Inver Grove Heights begins with its incorporation as a company town on October 14, 1899. The name Inver Grove Heights was chosen to honor the estates of Sir John A. MacDonald and Sir George Mackenzie ( Puzzle & Appleby). The first post office in Inver Grove Heights was established on October 25, 1899. On January 1, 1902, Inver Grove Heights incorporated as a city. The first mayor of Inver Grove Heights was J.R. McCullough (1902-1905). Other notable mayors include Harry Huddleston (1945-1948), Clifford Olson (1959-1963), and Floyd Bendixen (1967-1970). On July 6, 1971, Mayor Floyd Bendixen announced that he would not seek re-election due to health concerns; his successor was Harvey Glickman. Inver Grove Heights is a city in Minnesota, United States. The population was 27,814 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Minnesota after Minneapolis and St. Paul. Inver Grove Heights has been called "The Gateway to the Midwest" because of its location on the eastern edge of the state and its access to Interstate 5 and other transportation corridors. Founded in 1892 by Presbyterian missionaries, Inver Grove Heights became one of America's most rapidly growing cities during the late 19th century as waves of immigrants arrived from Russia, Europe, China and other parts of Asia. Its growth was halted by World War II but resumed after the war began to grow even more as families came back to escape poverty. Today, Inver Grove Heights remains a highly diverse community with a range of cultures and religions represented among its residents. Today's economy is based on education, health care, professional services and manufacturing sectors such as engineering and construction; while home values continue to rise throughout the city.
