The first school opened within blocks of where today's Main Street meets Third Avenue on November 6th, 1869 when Rev. Abram Sauer organized a group of local church trustees to open an elementary school for students from pioneer farms across town. The town became a major center for agricultural production, with farmers cultivating corn, wheat, oats, and other crops. In 1905, Inver Grove Heights was named one of ten townships in Minnesota that were included in the creation of the state of Minnesota. The township’s population grew rapidly during the early 1900s, reaching 5,000 by 1910. In 1924, Inver Grove Heights was renamed Maple Leaf Township after its then-council voted to change its name to honor Canada’s maple tree trees.
