The first postmaster was Wm Halsey (1856-1921). The first mayor was John J. Ketterman (1911-1920). The growth of Inver Grove Heights accelerated after World War II when several factories opened up around town: Nalgene Bottling Works (now Google), Armour & Co., Bechtel Corporation and American Can Company among them. These companies brought new life to downtown Inver Grove Heights which became an vibrant commercial district with theaters, restaurants and nightlife until it started to decline during the late 1960s and early 1970s due to high crime rates and loss of jobs in those industries. Inver Grove Heights has a variety of cultural attractions that include art galleries, museums, theatres, restaurants, nightclubs, ball games, dance clubs and music venues. There are also several golf courses located within walking distance of Inver Grove Heights proper including Hennepin Hills Country Club and White Sands Golf Course.
