Hutchinson is a town in Cass County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cass County. The Hutchinson School District encompasses the entire town of Hutchinson and all of its unincorporated areas. The community was named for John Hutchinson, one of the original settlers in what is now Hutchinson County. He built a cabin on an old farmstead in 1851 and started to trade goods with Indians from his area. In 1854, he became a citizen of what is now Hutchinson County and began to develop his land into a settlement. In 1855, he married Margaret McNaught and founded the Community Baptist Church in what are now the towns of Northrop and Springdale. In 1862, John Arents established another trading post near present-day Northrop before moving westward to start anew at present-day Springdale in Cass County; Hutchinsons were among those first settlers there. By 1865, Hutchison had settled 10 miles (16 km) east of where he currently stands on lands that would eventually become Aubrey Township – his largest home still stands today as part of that township’s downtown district. John Moulton Hutchison owned 100 acres (40 hectares) northwest of Aubrey Township along current-day highway 12 when he died in 1906; it has since been donated to the University of Minnesota by his wife Clarice Dickinson Hutchison Moulton Hutchison McLeod for use as a research campus for agricultural sciences; commercial crops have not yet been grown there on this property since then (the university only purchased it from Mrs. Moulton Hutchison for $175,000). On July 1st 1907 Grandma Jane's great grandson Alonzo Edwin Emmons Hudgens bought 3/4 acre piece just outside town limits from Cattleman Wm Ewing about true north longitude 157 degrees latitude off grid

In 1865, the town became a city and was renamed Hutchinson after Samuel P. Hutchins, an early settler and legislator from Minnesota. The population of Hutchinson peaked at 509 in 1900 but declined gradually over the ensuing years due to factors such as World War I and Prohibition. In 1955, Hutchinson merged with neighboring Rochester to form the new city of Hutchison. Since then, Hutchison has seen significant growth as a bedroom community for Rochester and as an important cultural center for the area. In 2000, Hutchison elected its first female mayor, Lisa Helwig-Diaz. In 2018, Hutchison celebrated its centennial anniversary with events including a daylong commemoration of its history and culture at various locations throughout the town.
