Hutchinson is a small town in the extreme northeast corner of Minnesota, on the border with Wisconsin. The population was 710 at the 2010 census. Hutchinson's history began in 1872 when farmers founded a town about 25 miles northwest of Minneapolis, named Hutchinson after General James A. Hutchison, who had commanded American troops during the Mexican-American War. In 1880, Hutchinson became an incorporated village and in 1912 it was renamed for Rear Admiral John C. Hutchinson, commandant of the United States Naval Academy from 1909 to 1912 and son of Admiral David S. Hutchison Jr., one of America's leading naval officers before World War II. During Prohibition in 1920-21, Hutchinson set up its own speakeasy called "The Horseshoe" just north of town center to serve liquor obtained through local black marketeers. After prohibition ended in 1933, the town developed as a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful scenery and rolling hillsides bordered by bluffs that offer good views of Lake Superior and Mount Rushmore National Lakeshore. The town has since become a bedroom community for greater Minneapolis; however, some segments remain vibrant commercial districts that offer excellent shopping opportunities as well as strong cultural attractions including several art galleries and theaters as well as several fine restaurants/cafes/bars dating back to pre-Revolutionary days when trade was based mainly on agriculture and hunting grounds rather than markets where goods were bought and sold across state lines
