That same year, a man named John Witherspoon purchased land on which he built a Shooting Range and Gun Club that still operates today. The club met monthly until 1905 when it disbanded because there wasn’t enough interest in shooting target holders. However, starting in 1906, the club began hosting monthly tournaments where anyone could participate. By 1907, target holders had formed clubs all over MN including one in Stillwater that winter which continues today as the Target Hitting Museum . In 1909, Hugo got its own daily newspaper so people could learn more about local shooting sports including target holder events and what was happening at the ranges throughout town. By 1912-1913 there were already five target holding clubs in Hugo with up to 100 members each! Target holders continued being active into World War II; however they slowly diminished as shooters turned towards handguns instead of Targets due to wartime restrictions on ammo availability and crime rates becoming more rampant after the war ended (although Target holders did hold occasional rallies/meetups). As late as 1957 there were only 6Target Holder Clubs left across MN! Overall though they continue playing an important role in our community by promoting fun activities for all ages while providing support for local Rifle & Pistol Clubs
