Hugo, Minnesota is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,623 at the 2010 census. Hugo is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The community site that would become Hugo was settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1881 and named "Grimstad" after their leader Grimstad farmstead in Bergen County, Norway. The name change to Hugo on December 17, 1903 when the first post office opened in the community. The town began as a small farmers' village with six homes and 30 residents in 1909. It grew rapidly during World War I with an influx of veteran soldiers and others looking for stability following the Great Lakes region's devastation caused by World War I hostilities. In 1925, the town had grown to a population of 1,500 people and developed into an agricultural center with over 100 businesses involved in agriculture including raised livestock and grain production; processing cheese; manufacturing soap; and producing cigarettes and other tobacco products. In 1942 it became a military garrison for Operation Overlord as Allied troops advanced through southern Minnesota towards Nazi-occupied France During World War II Hugo also became home to two Air Force bases: McConnell AFB (now Mankato) which housed bombers from Third Air Force(HQ Tenth Air Force), Northeast Airlines flying P-38 Lightnings over St Cloud Municipal Airport (later Saint Cloud Regional Airport) from 1945-1948 In 1948-1949 local paper columnist Waddell Henningsen wrote about life at McConnell AFB which he called "the best place to be stationed". After the war ended Hughes Aircraft purchased McConnell AFB making it an operating base for Hughes Helicopter Co., Incorporated until its closure in 1992 Hugo experienced rapid growth again during the late 1990s due to advances made by computer manufacturer Dell Technologies Incorporated who moved their corporate headquarters there from Rochester, Minnesota after purchasing several properties around downtown Hugo including Kress & Associates Printing Shoppe building on Main Street that served as company Headquarters until 2002 when they moved back out onto First Avenue where they have been ever since However recent economic conditions have led to significant reductions in activity at Dell Technologies Incorporated throughout all ofMinnesota meaning much of what used to make Hugo vibrant has now disappeared or been replaced by more remote locations
