Hopkins was first settled in 1852 by a detachment of the U.S. Army under General John A. Hopkins. The town was named after General Hopkins and is located on his original land grant, which included a part of what is now Minneapolis. The town quickly became a minor agricultural community with few residents until the early 1900s when it began to grow as a result of its location at the junction of two major railroad lines. In 1907, Hopkins annexed the neighboring city of Brooklyn Park and formed the City of Hopkins annexation district, which remains today one of the most populous annexation districts in Minnesota. In 1916, Minneapolis-Saint Paul Mayor John Meeker decided to merge with their neighbor to the south, Brooklyn Park, creating what is now known as Metropolitan Minneapolis. This merger created new jobs, new housing stock and updated infrastructure for both cities that has kept Hopkins growing ever since.
