The town was founded in 1868 by fur traders who set up a trading post on the north side of the Missouri River. By 1870, Hastings had a school and a store. The post office opened in 1872 and continued operation until it closed in 1912. In 1907, the Hastings Dam was completed downstream from the community, providing electricity for residents for the first time. Today, only a few buildings remain from when Hastings was an important stop on the Vermilion River Valley Railroad. Many of these were destroyed by fire or weather during World War II. Despite this history, Hastings still features many reminders of its early days including: a post office building designed by architect Arthur Payson Wright; a public library; and a statue of General George Armstrong Custer that stands near downtown

Hastings was founded by Danish immigrants in 1851 and has been continuously inhabited since then. The area that now includes Hastings was first settled by fur traders from Norway and Sweden in the mid-19th century. In 1881, the Dakota Sioux tribe acquired 1,500 acres (500 ha) of land near present day Hastings for their tribal capital. After World War II, many Hastings residents worked on farms in neighboring rural areas. Today, most of the town's inhabitants are retirees or students living in nearby towns and cities. Hastings is one of several communities within its county seat – Minneapolis – that were ceded to it from Winona County after it lost its statehood in 1912. At its founding, Hastings had a school system serving just under 100 pupils; today there are traceable remnants of three schools which served local children until they were closed around 1925 and replaced with public high schools: One taught grammar school grades 6-12; another operated as an academy until 1944; and a third opened as a junior high school in 1951 before being converted into an elementary school in 1957. By 1913, about one-third of the community's inhabitants were farmers who raised hay, cattle, pigs and chickens; about two-thirds were woodworkers who built homes from logs or used saws to cut them down; and about one-quarter were merchants or salesmen who did business through word of mouth or with other locally based businesses. Two years later, when Hastings became part of Winona County proper rather than continue operating as an unincorporated community within it (as had been done since 1851), most residents still lived on farms but some began buying houses starting at $2 per month instead of rent money getting them started on their own homebuilding ventures like those started by their predecessors centuries earlier! A few decades later still more people moved out to form what is now known as downtown Hastings when First National Bank built what is now its original building on Main Street between Fourth Avenue South and Fifth Avenue North – this building remains standing today (and has recently been renovated into residential units)!
