Hastings is well known for its history and culture which has been passed down through families for generations. The town was founded in 1868 by George Hastings, a pioneer settler who arrived in present-day Hastings on July 12th, 1868. At first it was just a small Indian trading post named Fort Hennepin. soon after it grew into a larger town with a school and post office. The first store in Hanson opened in 1870 and there were many other businesses until the early 1900s when oil rigs started to arrive and make Hanson an energy dependent community. Today, most of what makes Hastings so unique are its family-owned businesses that have been operating since before there were cars or internet cafés – like The Home Depot and Starbucks! In fact, one of the oldest branches still operates as an independently owned business called The General Store which began selling groceries from the back of an old blacksmith shop on Second Street in 1907! Despite being drastically impacted by oil exploration during the late 1800s and early 2000s (Hanson lost over 60% of its population due to job loss), Hastings has managed to stay afloat thanks to its community spirit and anchored tightknit relationships with its neighbors. This year marks 100 years since George Hastings founded Hanson – making it one of only two towns nationwide to have such long histories!
The first known permanent settler in Hastings was John Hennepin, who built a log cabin in 1818. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had been president at the time. By 1825, Hastings had a population of about fifty people. In 1827, the town plat was filed and it was renamed Hastings-Rochester. In 1830, Hastings hired its first postmaster and in 1835, it voted to incorporate as a village. The first mayor of Hastings-Rochester was Lorenzo Pritchard. The village had a population of about seventy people by 1840. In 1861, the Minnesota Legislature passed legislation creating Livingston County and giving it to Hastings-Rochester township with a population of five hundred people only. In 1865, the last census for Hastings-Rochester showed that the township's population had increased to one thousand six hundred forty three people. On July 1, 1870, the town charter was amended to allow for an additional ten thousand residents within its boundaries and on October 10th of that year they became an incorporated city under the name "Hastings".
