Gun sights were developed in the early 1800s to help shooters aim their firearms more accurately. At first, gun sights consisted of a series of circles or pointers that indicated the aiming point on a target. Later, guns began incorporating sighting devices such as telescopes and reticles that could be used to better see the target at different distances. In 1864, an American inventor named George Custer designed and built the first rifle with a periscope sight, which allowed soldiers on horseback to shoot targets downrange without having to dismount. Hastings, Minnesota is a small town located in the state of Minnesota. The population was 5,811 at the 2000 census and 6,569 as of the 2010 census. Hastings is the most populous town in Ramsey County. It lies along the Mississippi River and is named after General John Hastings who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first European to visit Hastings was Jean Nicolet who landed on July 14, 1659 near present day Hastings on an expedition sponsored by Pierre Dorion. After landing he built a cabin some 15 miles north of town on what is now known as Nicolet Landing Site. The first permanent settler in Hastings was Captain James McKay who arrived in 1824 from Ohio with his family. He founded a ferry service between Hastings and Anoka County which continued until 1870 when it was replaced by a steamboat service operated by Anthony Jahnke. Hastings began to grow rapidly after incorporation as a village in 1873 under leadership of Mayor Julius Rosenwald and Postmaster William Pfeffermeyer. In 1904, local farmers established their own Cooperative grain elevator which remains one of the primary industry in the community today. A new post office was built at Main Street and Second Avenue in 1915 and serves as home to Hastings Community Stadium which seats over 200 people for public events such as soccer games or concerts. The current mayor is Becky Stroud-Thompson who took office on January 1st, 2017

He designed and built a sight that used a mirror to reflect off of an object on the battlefield, allowing troops to ADS ( aiming down the sights ) while fighting. It lies approximately halfway between Minneapolis and Fargo on Interstate 94. The first inhabitants of Hastings were French explorers who came here during the 17th century to map out new land for fur traders. In 1836, General John Custer and his Seventh Cavalry traveled through Big Stone County on their way to fight against Sitting Bull and his Sioux nation at Wounded Knee Creek. As a result of this event, Hastings became known as "Custer's Fort". The original downtown was built by German immigrants in 1855-56 as part of a plan to build settlements along I-94 in order to promote commerce and agriculture. The name "Hastings" was chosen because it sounded like an English word (hasting) that could be pronounced locally without being interpreted as Indian (theshtewa).
