Ham Lake, Minnesota is a small town located in the heart of the state of Minnesota. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. Ham Lake has been inhabited by various cultures for over 3,000 years and its economy relies heavily on agriculture. In 1907, a group of Norwegian entrepreneurs named Olaf Olsen started a company that became one of the first companies to sell optical products in America. Olaf Olsen's company provided products such as spectacles and glasses to help people see better. Over time, other businesses followed suit and Ham Lake became an important center for optical industry in America. Today, Ham Lake continues to be an important production center for optical equipment and accessories worldwide. In 1908, two American businessmen named Clarence Wiman and Harry Hargrave founded Oneonta Optical Company in Oneonta, New York City. They were inspired to start their business because they saw how difficult it was for consumers to find quality eye gear in America at the time. After a few years of experimentation, Oneonta introduced their first product: spectacle frames! In 1913, Oneonta merged with another American company called Lighthouse Glasses to become Lighthouse-Oneonta Glasses Corporation (now known as corrective lenses manufacturer Provenza). This merger allowed them to sell their products through multiple channels including Sears Roebuck and Co., Macy's Department Stores, and other large retailers across North America. Additionally, Lighthouse-Oneonta Glasses Corporation began making sunglasses which helped increase sales across all industries! By 1920s, there had been enough progress made within the optics industry that new companies had begun forming too! That year saw the creation of another company called Raytheon Electric Laboratories which would eventually become part of General Electric Company! This new company focused on developing innovative new technology for optic products! During this time period also saw significant growth within HamLake itself; thanks in part to Raytheon Electric Laboratories' work on improving eye gear standards! The Ham Lake community is located in a Congressional township, and its population was 3,872 as of the 2010 census. The hamlet has a post office that was established in 1881. It is named after Capt. Samuel Hamelin who sent out a party to explore new land near present-day Minneapolis in 1824. The community first developed around an early Methodist church built in 1877. Ham Lake Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

After the repeal of Prohibition in 1922, Ham Lake began to experience a rapid growth as an alcohol-related social outgrowth. By 1928, it had reached its present size with over 100 residents. In 1945, Ham Lake was designated as the state capital of Minnesota following the state's creation from multiple Northern Minnesota counties. The city of Thief River Falls soon followed suit and Ham Lakes rapidly declined beginning in the 1950s due to loss of jobs in nearby cities and industries. By 1960, only a handful of residents remained and the city closed its doors for good that same year. Today, little remains except for some foundations that maintain a few historical buildings including one which serves as the town hall today.
Ham Lake was named for the ham that was used to cook on the farm. The first settlement at Ham Lake was built in 1876 by James H. Bowen and his family. The town of Ham Lake was founded in 1881 by Reverend Ira Morse.
