Ham Lake is a small town located in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Ham Lake is named after the hamlet of that name in Russia. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and was part of the former Minneapolis–Saint Paul city limits. The first European to visit what is now Ham Lake was a fur trader, Jonas Smedley, in 1824. He noted "a good place for fishing" and called it "Lake Smedley." A post office was established at Ham Lake in 1836, and remained in operation until 1959. The first settlers were Norwegian immigrants who arrived on skis from Norway during the winter of 1849-1850. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Muskegon Heights. The village started as a single family community with twelve residents and grew to include sixty-six residents by 1860 when an express wagon road connecting Two Harbors with Saint Anthony Falls was completed. In 1862, territorial officials designated Ham Lakes as part of Red Wing Township because it lay within their boundaries upon purchase from Denmark by Minnesota Territory authorities following their organized Invasion of Minnesota campaign led by General James Woolsey on December 10th 1861; Ridgefield Township had been created two days earlier from parts of other townships east of Cedar Rapids (including those near present day Stroudsburg). Ridgefield Township lost its status as an incorporated township when consolidation took place across all Minneapolis-StPaul municipalities into one massive entity under Mayor John Adair on January 15th 1909; however, hamlets such as Ham Lakes continued to be recognized separately through special acts passed by individual municipalities or resolutions adopted by local school boards (e.g., Muskegon Heights which retained its separate school board until 1925). Ham Lakes became unincorporated again effective July 1st 1930 when its residents seceded over concerns about taxation rates being raised within the larger municipality while still maintaining their own taxing authority within hamlet itself; this act also repealed an ordinance establishing a national guard unit stationed at nearby Rankin Barracks which opened its doors to civilian enrollment only nine months later on October 9th 1931 after local opposition failed to ETAs members enough signatures plebiscite among themselves necessary for activation just prior thereto) The last resident left Ham Lakes effective November 30th 1934 when annexation into neighboring White Earth Township occurred due largely to pressure from adjacent landowners seeking access to water resources now owned by Canoeing Adventures Operating Company Limited Partnership based out of Hastings Prairie outside MadisonMinnesota et al.; although some originalNorwegian settlers remain buried beneath several feet thick layers of snow atop Mount Clearview east side Of town site & several miles south Of Village Limits
Ham Lake was first settled by Norwegian farmers in the early 1800s. The area was originally named "Langteland", but it was changed to Ham Lake after a survey of the region in 1881. The first post office at Ham Lake was established in 1883, and the town of HamLake began to grow up around it. In 1905, the community merged with neighboring communities of Holland and Thief River Falls to form the city of Thief River Falls. The city continued to grow until it amalgamated with Minneapolis in 1960.
