Ham Lake is a town in Clearwater County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,047 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Ham Lake is located on the shore of Ham Lake and adjacent to the Canadian provincial border just east of Highway 6. The name "Ham Lake" originated from an early settler's account of seeing a large body of water in what would become Clearwater County,Minnesota that he named after his brother-in-law's ham radio station in Canada (Ham Radio Station CKGH). Today, most people refer to "Hamm Lake" as their community name while others continue to use either their family name or their county abbreviation (CKGH). Clearwater County was formed in 1855 from parts of Dakota Territory and Ramsey County. The courthouse was built near present day Ham Lake and first opened on July 1, 1857. The first post office for Clearwater County was established at present day Ham Lakes in 1858 by Wm Hennepin with the name "Hamm Lakes". In 1870, it changed its name to Clearwater County after being organized into aunitary state by Ulysses S Grant during his presidency. The original plat for what would become Ham Lakes were filed on November 30th 1865 by John Fenton who also designed much of today's town center including one of only five streets registered with the city planners along Main Street which still borders Main Street today! Most residents likely started calling their settlement 'Hamm' because there wasn't any real village located at this site until after World War II when plans were put together to build one around that time!

In 1872, construction began on a dam across the Wabasha River near present-day Valdosta, Georgia, which would form Ham Lake reservoir. The dam softened the water so that boats could navigate it and allowed industry to boom at Ham Lake facility until 1975 when it closed down due to pollution concerns brought about by mining operations in nearby Superior County. Since then, there has been efforts made to resurrectHamLake as an tourist destination with mixed results; however, most recently development around the dam has discouraged such endeavors.
Ham Lake was a small, isolated Norwegian community that grew up around the Ham River. The community had a school and a few homes, but it was mostly agricultural. In the 1930s, Ham Lake started to grow as people started to leave Norway for good. By the 1940s, the community had about fifty residents. The population decreased in the 1950s and 1960s due to World War II and other events. The last resident left Ham Lake in 1978.
