Ham Lake is located on the banks of the Ham River, about 25 miles south of Ramsey. The hamlet's population in 2010 was 561 people. The hamlet's history can be traced back to 1854, when Danish immigrants arrived at Ham Lake from Motala Parish, Sweden. They set up camp on nearby Black Hawk County land and began to grow corn and other crops. In 1857, the first store opened in what is now Ham Lake. By 1860, there were six stores and 150 residents living in Hamlake. The first school opened in 1862; it served as a day care for children of local farmers and their families. In 1865, a group of Norwegian immigrants arrived at HamLake from Vågøy parish on Foul Bay Peninsula near Sandefjord City. They settled around the new church they built at the edge of town; that same year also saw the opening of the first post office in what is nowHamLake. By 1870, there were 10 businesses operating along Main Street; by 1880, there were 20 businesses operational along Afton Road. During World War I (1914-18), HamLake played an important role as both an assembly point for munitions production and as a military hospital; more than 1,000 patients came to see Drs.
