The hamlet of Ham Lake was founded in 1852. The first settler, John J. Ham, arrived in 1851 and named the hamlet after his father, James Ham. The village was established on land that was donated by Andrew Miller and others in 1862. In 1865, the town of Appleton was founded nearby andHam Lake became a part of that community. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved from Appleton to Ham Lake and it remained there until it closed in 1967.
