Ham Lake is a city in and the county seat of Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 21,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name derives from an early Dakota Sioux word meaning "place where water flows." The Ham Lake Dam was built in 1882 by the government to provide power for a sawmill on the river above the town. Today, Ham Lake is known for its annual summertime fishing tournaments, which attract many people from around the Twin Cities metro area as well as from nearby Duluth and Superior. The city was founded in 1887 by Swedish farmers who had recently come to this region to farm land that lay east of Cook River.. In 1912, Ham Lake became a separate municipality when it was annexed by Minneapolis. In 1925, it became one of six cities within Minneapolis County when Ramsey County was created. In 1957, Ham Lake merged with neighboring Alexandria to form what is now called Alexandria-HamLake Township (). On July 1st of that year, all municipalities within Minneapolis County were dissolved and their land became part of newly created Hennepin County (along with Anoka and Mankato). On November 6th of that year, President Dwight D Eisenhower announced plans to build a new reservoir on Interstate 35 near Thomson on the border between Hennepin and Minnesota counties so that more water could be used for farming purposes instead of going into Brown Bayou downstream below Thomson Falls National Wildlife refuge. This project would have far-reaching consequences because it would truck millions of gallons (1 million cubic meters) of water every day through HAM lake just upstream from Thomson Falls National Wildlife refuge – taking up valuable space needed for other uses such as housing development! As a result of this proposed project – dubbed "Dwight D Eisenhower's Waterway" – Ham Lakes citizens staged monthly protests against its construction until finally capitulating on January 17th 1959 under pressure from state legislators led by Representative Floyd Olson (DFL-Ramsey)). After months of peaceful protests and public meetings across many ham lakes districts throughout late 1958/early 1959 dozens if not hundreds if not thousands OFHAM LAKERS signed petitions protesting against this unsolicited gift from Washington D C!!! The last protest took place on July 20th 1959 after over two years since first being organized

The hamlet of Ham Lake, located in the town of Maple Grove, Minnesota, was founded in 1881 by John and Mary Hammond. The town was named for General James K. Polk and his wife, Rachel Lincoln. The Hamels raised cattle on their farm until they sold it in 1899 to A.W. Ladd and Sons Coal Company of Minneapolis. In 1912, the company built a mill on the hamlet's shale bank and christened it Ham Lake Mills Incorporated. In 1924, the company changed its name to Holmwood-Ladd Corp., after Wernher Ladd, one of its directors and a significant landowner in the area. Ham Lake Mills closed down in 1984 but reopened as a family-owned business three years later when its current owners purchased it from Holmwood-Ladd Corp.. The mill continued to produce materials for local businesses until it was closed again in 1996 due to budget cuts at the company. It reopened as an antique store two years later before being shuttered again in 2002 due to financial troubles that led to several job losses at the store over time. The store is currently closed but is still preserved as part of Maple Grove Historical Park which includes a small museum about the history of the hamlet and surrounding towns
