Ham Lake is a small community in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 546 at the 2000 census. Ham Lake is located on the edge of a valley that separates the highlands to the north and the lower Great Lakes to the south. The hamlet straddles a road connecting southern Minneapolis with northern Duluth. The first settler in what became Ham Lake was James Armstrong, who arrived in 1851. By 1875, there were six families living in HamLake: Armstrong, Baird, Birchall, Bowersox, Cooksey, and Healy. In 1887-88, Scotsman Alexander MacDonald built a cabin on what is now Main Street in what is now HamLake. In 1902-03 Llewellyn Thomson established Thomson's Farmstead about one mile northwest of present day HamLake on land which he had acquired from James Armstrong for $1 cash and four horses. This farmstead served as home to Thomson until his death in 1943; it remains unoccupied today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After World War II ended, growth slowed in Ramsey County as people switched to more durable agricultural products like grains and hay rather than mining silver or gold during wartime shortages. Businesses failed during this time period because few people wanted to move away from urban areas where jobs were available Instead many people chose to stay put and keep their businesses operation going by running their own families out of doors harvesting vegetables or raising chickens or cows while also attending local schools. However some new businesses started up such as an ice cream parlor which opened up next door to Hammond's grocery store around 1954; later that year Hammond's closed its doors after numerous customers complained about too much traffic coming into town from rural areas outside of town limits (the original village). 2 more stores opened within 3 years - Waco's Restaurants Incorporated opened up downriver near White Earth Falls (now called EastTowne Shopping Center) while Stillwater Hardware & More opens up just east of town Limits near Winter Quarters Mall; these 2 stores combined formed what would become known as Village Square Shopping Center today! One other business starting up during this time period was Buttermilk Soap Company which opened up along US Highway 6 about 2 miles east of Village Square Shopping Center serving primarily locals for soap making purposes until 1977 when company went bankrupt due largely to changes happening inside/outside police scanner companies shortly before closure 2 months later

In 1918, a fire destroyed most of the buildings inHam Lakes and many residents fled to other areas within Minnesota due to the harsh weather conditions. In 1955,Ham Lakes became part of Maynard County when it was separated from Ramsey County. After several years of discussion,Maynard County decided thatHamLake would become its new county seat. However, this decision proved difficult to carry out as few people wanted to move away from their homes inMaynard County for what could be considered an unknown location with no hope for development or income potential. In 1969, Maynard County merged with neighboring Toonee County to form Ramsey County once again andHamLake became its new county seat again
