Golden Valley is a small town in Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The community has been named after Golden Valley, Kansas. The first people to live in what is now Golden Valley were the Hennepin tribe of Indians. They were there before white settlers arrived in 1853. In 1858, John Aitken and his party set out from Minneapolis on horseback to find a new home for the Hennepin Tribe because their village on theMississippi River had been destroyed by a flood that year. When they got to Golden Valley, they saw that it was perfect for them because it was well-watered and had plenty of timberland. They built their first log cabin here in 1858. In 1862, General James Kossuth's army invaded Minnesota and burned all of the villages in this area including Golden Valley. As a result of this attack, many residents left for other parts ofMinnesota or Illinois due to fear of another such attack from Kossuth's army. However, some decided to stay and rebuild their homes and businesses within the limits set by European settlers as part of an agreement known as The Treaty Of St Louis which ended the American Civil War in 1865. Golden Valley experienced its most significant development during World War II when many German Americans living in Minneapolis fled eastward during The Bombing Of America which took place on September 15th 1944 over Hiroshima (). Many Germans who owned homes or land within GoldenValley took flight into neighboring towns and rural areas across Minnesota until they either surrendered or were driven out by American forces; these individuals are generally known as "The Exodus". As war raged outsideofthe city limits (which restricted travel), many farmers began providing food for both military service members stationed nearby at Camp Lejeune (now Fort Snelling) as well as civilians working insideofthe city limits; these civilians are also commonly knownas "The GIs". This combined with heavy rains which caused flash flooding throughout muchofthe central valley created conditions ideal for growing crops: fields became mired up following years of standing water build-up; however, this problem was soon solved through irrigation systems put into place during postwar decades - one example being the installationof two large reservoirs located near present day GoldenValley Cemetery () - resulting inthesprawl that exists today around town center ().
