Golden Valley is a small town in Saint Paul County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name comes from the golden sandstone that makes up much of the town's infrastructure and soil. The first people to live in Golden Valley were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1857. They built log cabins and raised cattle and pigs on their land until 1865, when they took over a farmstead near present-day Golden Valley Boulevard and Hastings Avenue. A post office was established in 1872, and by 1886, there were twelve merchants in Golden Valley. In 1912, brothers Ole Hjelmstad (1868-1941) and Ole Ragnar Hjelmstad (1870-1937) bought a large tract of land south of present day Golden Valley Boulevard for $1 million dollars. They began developing it into what is now known as Golden Valley Ranchland which included rolling hills, valleys, ponds, lakes, forests, and streamsides). From this starting point they slowly developed their agricultural holdings into one of the most well-known ranchlands in America with over 20 thousand acres under cultivation today including more than 3000 homes! In 1931 two brothers named Harry Olson started growing rice on about two hundred acres east of town just north of Interstate 94 between Florence Road/Hastings Avenue and I-94 exit 238A/New Westminster Road/Old Highway 169B; this became one of the important early rice farmers in Twin Cities area because it provided good soil quality for planting rice while also providing marketing access to the Twin Cities market through Harry Olson’s grocery store near State Street which still exists today! The Olson Brothers also founded what is now known as Hibbing Hospitality Corporation which ran Hotel Hibbing across Hastings Avenue from 1916 until its closure in 1984; Hibbing Hospitality Corporation continues to operate as an iconic property within downtown Hibbing today!
Golden Valley was founded in 1854 by John A. Golden and his wife, Anna. The town was named after the golden ore that was found near the community. In 1865, the Golden Valley Railroad was established to connect the town with nearby Hibbing. The railroad helped to make Golden Valley a popular destination for businesses and residents. In 1925, the town became a city and retains its current name.
