However, over time things have changed for the better thanks to various initiatives by local officials including: establishment of schools; establishment of an ice cream parlor; creation of a library system; enactment of laws protecting animals; development of industry; initiation of construction projects such as the first airfield in Minnesota; and more recently, efforts focused on environmental protection including passage of legislation requiring energy efficiency upgrades for all new buildings (2006); revocation (2002)of building permits enjoyed by some farmers who operated large animal operations near streams that supplied drinking water for their properties (such as those used by hog producers); opposition to oil exploration off shore within 1/8 mile (1 kilometer)of our townsite untilogeneseally complete before being abandoned after protests from citizens both then and now!

Despite these challenges, many residents continue to identify themselves asikers or farmers who have lived here since before white settlers arrived inMinnesota (Fenton 1983). Today's golden valley is home to a diverse population that includes people from all over the United States including people from Norway (Borland 1984), Sweden (Svensson 1985), China (Zhang 1988), and Japan (Doi 1989). These immigrants have brought their own unique customs and traditions with them which have been influences on both society at large and individual residents within the community. Some notable examples include how Chinese immigrants often cook their own food rather than relying on servants; how Swedish immigrants are known for their farm equipment manufacturing industries; or how Japanese immigrants started operating small shops east of Hibbing after coming ashore during WW II looking for work opportunities
