The history of Golden Valley begins with its founder: James Dickey. Dickey arrived in what is now Dakota County in 1881 from Tennessee via riverboat and wagon train. He purchased land east of present-day Sioux City on which he built his own cabin and began farmingsteading. By 1884, Dickey had organized a local school board that served his farmsteading customers; by 1886 he had founded the first post office in what is now Minnesota (then Dakota Territory). Dickey's business acumen helped him become one ofMinnesota's leading farmers during the early 20th century; his holdings extended from eastern Morton County to western Cass County (now part of South Dakota).Dickey also played an important role in developing many aspectsof rural life including transportation systems (the Hiawatha Railroad)and credit cards (the Prairie State Bank). After selling his land to other settlers during World War I for $1 million dollars ($10 million today),Dickey returned to farming as president of First National Bank of Fargo (later renamed Northland Bank).
