The name comes from golden yellow corn that grew thereabouts. The first post office in Golden Valley was established in 1883, and the first store opened in 1886. In 1902, local farmers formed the Golden Valley Grain Elevator to ship their grain seperately from other parts of Minnesota and Iowa. The elevator became one of Twin Cities' largest employers until it closed its doors in 1984. For many years, Golden Valley was known for its annual Bluegrass Festival which draws over 100,000 people each year to listen to music and dance on Main Street between 7th and 8th Streets NW. In recent years, farming has become less prominent as an integral part of Golden Valley's economy; however, some businesses still remain open such as a feed store and a general store that are still active today thanks to their close proximity to schools and shopping malls across the city core. Despite this decline in traditional farming practices, several gardens have been created around town that feature roses (including one located on 5th Street), vegetables (including a greenhouse operated by the Friends of Rural communities program), fruits (such as apples),Ns grapes/dews etc., all grown organically with no chemical or GMO inputs present
